One thing you definitely do not share with Julia Child is class. Cleaving leaves me feeling very sorry for your long suffering husband, and disappointed that you chose to follow a narcissistic path.
I have two questions for you: 1.How did you cook through "Mastering the Art of French Cooking." Did you have a month set aside at the end for desserts, or did you mark the recipes off as you went and skip around? 2. I just read about the loss of your pet and am feeling very sad. I had to put my Yorkie down a few years ago and now have a 2-year old Shih Tzu named Buffy. She is the joy of my life -- along with my husband, of course! I have seen the Julie & Julia movie twice and just received Volumes I and II of Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I can tell you that it was truly overwhelming reviewing all those recipes. My husband said he wants a new dish every day. Well, that's not gonna happen since I am a 53-year old working gal and won't be retiring until Sep 2011. Ok, so I don't normally follow blogs... However, I was finally able to watch Julie & Julia on blueray the other night and I was so touched, I had to read more! I have been searching for years for something about which I am passionate and could earn a living doing. Alas, I have not found my happy place to date, but watching Julie & Julia gave me HOPE! After being a successful attorney for five years, you can imagine my shock after being among the millions to have lost their job, and at the same time having to move from the Northeast to the Midwest because of my husband's career. 32 years old, I've had to redefine who I am and what it is that I really want to do in the future.
I have written a novel that I want to publish but have left it in my black binder for years because I was lacking the encouragement and drive to continue working on it and making it to a publisher.
Seeing you is making me believe and push forward with a plan I made years ago. Unfortunately, I've gotten some discouraging advice about "publishing" and what a bad bad world it is out there...
I know now that whenever I get down, I will go to your blog to get inspiration. Your success is success for all of us out there who have hope that one day our hard work will pay off.

Oh I so hope you read this, Julie. First of all your blog, cooking your way through Julia's cookbook and the subsequent movie completely inspired me. I don't mean inspired on the inside and tiny tear welled up in my eye. I mean I actually decided to do my own year long project. It's called A to Z with Meryl and Me. I chose 26 films of Meryl Streep and will perform 26 scenes from them. Every other week, I show these to the free world via every social network known to me. What is so ironic is the first one that was already shot and shown is from the movie, Adaptation and the character I played is Susan Orlean!

Hey Julie! I saw the movie, then got to listen to your audio book this winter while nursing my new baby. Your reading was so much company for me. I have had some post-partum depression and I was glad to have something to enjoy. Thanks for making me smile. We are a couple years apart in age, I can totaly relate to "It's your move". I stayed up until 4am last night finishing Cleaving - makes me look forward to whatever you write next. I'm a bit disappointed that "D" wasn't "D.S." (just kidding).
I found your book to be extremely compelling and I seriously admire your honesty. (A note re: therapy - can be v. useful for learning how to fight productively, but that's may all be water under the bridge ny now.) I also just love how your fab dad defused your stress at Xmas with a noogie and loving "Oh Jules, you're so crazy". Some people have a gift for taking the tension out of a situation.
Plus the gang at Fleishers sounds like the Platonic ideal of what a butcher shop should be. Very cool trip to Ukraine too.
I love meat. I've tried not to love it so much - I even have taken the odd stab at being a veg, but truth is I'd waste away without it because I just can't manage to consume sufficient amounts of anything else.

When I watched your movie, I cried at the end (I think my husband thought I was crazy :)). I could totally relate to your frustration and your passion to write. I was so happy for you when your dream came true! It has been my dream since I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer to help women who have or will face this horrific disease. Dear Julie: I was very sorry to hear of the death of your beloved pet. I have two 12 year old dogs - husky, and a yellow lab, as well as a 3 year old pug, and I love them dearly, so I know how painful it was for you to lose Robert. I just finished listening to your excellent book, Cleaving, with you reading it, as well as the interview at the end. It was very painful for me to hear your story at the beginning (although I loved the butcher info and recipes!). My own daughter is doing the exact same thing, to her husband she has known since 17 years of age. 21 years together now. 3 beautiful little daughters (13, 10, 8). She has been so dissatisfied with her husband's lack of attention, interest, for the last few years, and when she met this motivational speaker in November, to "Choose the life you want", she chose HIM! She managed weekends away with him, and wrote profuse emails, proclaiming her love, connection, etc. Of course her husband found these emails, the same way Eric found yours. The situation is pretty terrible in their house, but they are not telling the children yet. I can only hope that in time, as you did, the marriage can be salvaged. It is horrible for my husband and me however, and it is hard for us to ever think about welcoming her back into the family situation. She seems to have turned her back on everyone and seems quite upbeat about what she is doing. Her husband still professes to love her, and cries, has lost 17 pounds in the last month, is on all kinds of anti anxiety pills, whisky. It is a mess. We are supporting him above all else. Anyway, THANK YOU for writing your difficult story - it gave me a better perspective on the situation, and will help me come to terms with her behaviour. I already had a copy of Julie and Julia so I got that signed-I didn't buy a copy of Cleaving but have since borrowed one and I'm sorry I didn't buy a copy to get signed. I wasn't a fan before but I am now. I'm almost finished-its a very satisfying read. I'm enjoying your voice-so thanks. About 18 years ago we raised 5 pigs and then butchered them in our back yard. We had no clue.

ReplyDeleteI just read about the loss of your pet and am feeling very sad. I had to put my Yorkie down a few years ago and now have a 2-year old Shih Tzu named Buffy. She is the joy of my life -- along with my husband, of course! I have seen the Julie & Julia movie twice and just received Volumes I and II of Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I can tell you that it was truly overwhelming reviewing all those recipes. My husband said he wants a new dish every day. Well, that's not gonna happen since I am a 53-year old working gal and won't be retiring until Sep 2011. Well, I didn't mean to go on and on, but I just wanted you to know how much I admire you and what you have accomplished! Take care!

I have been searching for years for something about which I am passionate and could earn a living doing. Alas, I have not found my happy place to date, but watching Julie & Julia gave me HOPE! After being a successful attorney for five years, you can imagine my shock after being among the millions to have lost their job, and at the same time having to move from the Northeast to the Midwest because of my husband's career. 32 years old, I've had to redefine who I am and what it is that I really want to do in the future.
I have written a novel that I want to publish but have left it in my black binder for years because I was lacking the encouragement and drive to continue working on it and making it to a publisher.
Seeing you is making me believe and push forward with a plan I made years ago. Unfortunately, I've gotten some discouraging advice about "publishing" and what a bad bad world it is out there...
I know now that whenever I get down, I will go to your blog to get inspiration. Your success is success for all of us out there who have hope that one day our hard work will pay off.

I don't mean inspired on the inside and tiny tear welled up in my eye. I mean I actually decided to do my own year long project. It's called A to Z with Meryl and Me. I chose 26 films of Meryl Streep and will perform 26 scenes from them. Every other week, I show these to the free world via every social network known to me. What is so ironic is the first one that was already shot and shown is from the movie, Adaptation and the character I played is Susan Orlean!

I'm loving every word of the book... and it is quite inspiring, so I'm expecting the worse: I'm already in love with cooking and this tends do grow... worse!

ReplyDeleteI saw the movie, then got to listen to your audio book this winter while nursing my new baby. Your reading was so much company for me. I have had some post-partum depression and I was glad to have something to enjoy. Thanks for making me smile. We are a couple years apart in age, I can totaly relate to "It's your move". I was like that with "Silver Spoons". Anyway, can't say enough how much I enjoyed the audio book, hope you do more. It's like listening to a friend...
I stayed up until 4am last night finishing Cleaving - makes me look forward to whatever you write next. I'm a bit disappointed that "D" wasn't "D.S." (just kidding).
ReplyDeleteI found your book to be extremely compelling and I seriously admire your honesty. (A note re: therapy - can be v. useful for learning how to fight productively, but that's may all be water under the bridge ny now.) I also just love how your fab dad defused your stress at Xmas with a noogie and loving "Oh Jules, you're so crazy". Some people have a gift for taking the tension out of a situation.
Plus the gang at Fleishers sounds like the Platonic ideal of what a butcher shop should be. Very cool trip to Ukraine too.
I love meat. I've tried not to love it so much - I even have taken the odd stab at being a veg, but truth is I'd waste away without it because I just can't manage to consume sufficient amounts of anything else.
Years ago my brother had a crush on a butcher chick at an organic market. Something about her self assurance combined with the blood-covered apron seemed very cool to him.

Now that my son has become a Marine I've expanded my dream. I want/need to make a difference. And I won't give up until I do! Thanks for inspiring me to never give up!!
P.S. My heart goes out to you over your loss of Robert. I recently had to put down my Great Dane, Shakespeare of 10.5 years. I think there will always be a void, but he filled my life with unconditional love and for that I will always be grateful.
But Julie. The loss of Robert, your big bear, DOES rank up there with King Lear. Higher.

I just watched the movie Julie and Julia watched it once and had to watch it again. I felt very sad that you did not get to meet her I wish she took the time to meet you before she died. I think you are a serious cook because it takes a lot of dedication to do what you did my hat is off to you and your Husband for putting up with it but at least he didn't go hungry with all the coking that you did.

Dear Julie: I was very sorry to hear of the death of your beloved pet. I have two 12 year old dogs - husky, and a yellow lab, as well as a 3 year old pug, and I love them dearly, so I know how painful it was for you to lose Robert.
ReplyDeleteI just finished listening to your excellent book, Cleaving, with you reading it, as well as the interview at the end. It was very painful for me to hear your story at the beginning (although I loved the butcher info and recipes!). My own daughter is doing the exact same thing, to her husband she has known since 17 years of age. 21 years together now. 3 beautiful little daughters (13, 10, 8). She has been so dissatisfied with her husband's lack of attention, interest, for the last few years, and when she met this motivational speaker in November, to "Choose the life you want", she chose HIM! She managed weekends away with him, and wrote profuse emails, proclaiming her love, connection, etc. Of course her husband found these emails, the same way Eric found yours. The situation is pretty terrible in their house, but they are not telling the children yet. I can only hope that in time, as you did, the marriage can be salvaged. It is horrible for my husband and me however, and it is hard for us to ever think about welcoming her back into the family situation. She seems to have turned her back on everyone and seems quite upbeat about what she is doing. Her husband still professes to love her, and cries, has lost 17 pounds in the last month, is on all kinds of anti anxiety pills, whisky. It is a mess. We are supporting him above all else. Anyway, THANK YOU for writing your difficult story - it gave me a better perspective on the situation, and will help me come to terms with her behaviour. I am looking forward to your next book

I already had a copy of Julie and Julia so I got that signed-I didn't buy a copy of Cleaving but have since borrowed one and I'm sorry I didn't buy a copy to get signed. I wasn't a fan before but I am now. I'm almost finished-its a very satisfying read. I'm enjoying your voice-so thanks. About 18 years ago we raised 5 pigs and then butchered them in our back yard. We had no clue.

I miss the finesse here so much. Especially when I'd like to go out and spoil myself... Just doesn't happen. I have to do it myself or I don't get it... Your movie was truly inspiring!!!

Writing that book took a lot of heart and a lot of guts (there's a pun in there somewhere,isn't there?) and I'm glad you did. Well done.
