Hi Julie - I just want to say congrats on all your success starting with your 365 days of cooking to the movie - wow - all from your little kitchen and blog - i remember reading about you in the nyt and checking out the blog - just watched the trailer - Meryl Streep is amazing - her voice is just like Julia - I can still remember watching Julia Child as a 10 year old in Massachusetts on public television - it was entertainment for me - we all loved her - read the book, My Life in France, last summer - this summer the movie will be wonderful and I will take a look at your book - This post's title "What Could Happen" is spot-on - well done - i started a blog to post my business - I will remember experience: "what could happen" Good luck with everything else.

I finished reading your book today - read it in 2 days after seeing the trailor for the movie (which, I heard from the yahoos in LA, is fantastic!)anyway, I've been a foodie my whole life, and even had a job as a chef. I have to tell you (bone up - personal info from a bleader is a little creepy) that as a caregiver (my husband has brain cancer), and the mom of two extremely energetic little girls I found your book to be hilarious and exactly what I needed. Plus, you brought back that special torture of memories from working as a...secretary in New York (albeit 2 years before 9/11)... Looking forward to the next book.

    Normally, I read at night to help put me to sleep. Your book was so totally the wrong thing to read at bedtime. It had me laughing so much through the night that even my cats couldn't sleep. I'm really looking forward to your movie.

  12. Julie, Thanks for coming the Le Cordon Bleu in Paris this week, everyone loved meeting you. Sorry it was the temperature of the innermost circle of hell. You should see us drenched in sweat after class. Cooking in the school kitchens is so frustrating that I turn to Julia after a disastrous class, and she always makes me feel better. I read your book on my kindle as soon as I heard you would be coming, and enjoyed it with a bottle of wine and a whole baguette! Enjoy Paris, it is starting to feel like home after just three weeks.

  13. Julie, I am reading Julie and Julia and wondering why I didn't read it before. It's wonderful. It would be perfect if you didn't take such cheap shots at Republicans, Bush, et al. When people ask, "How can you be a Republican?" I am insulted. I am a moderate, pro-choice, pro-gay marriage person who is a Republican because I don't trust the government to get anything right. Pretty soon, everyone will have my answer to why I am a Republican because we have a thug government worse than anything we've seen. You are too bright and too clever to go for the easy reach. Read and learn. You speak in cliches about Republicans and the Midwest. It makes you look like one of the crowd, which I highly doubt you are. Lyla Fox

    It shows that there is hope for smoking, drinking and eating folks ... even if they don't like eggs. Moderation in moderation.

  19. Julie, I just devoured your (first) book on a long drive from Oxford MS to Eureka Springs AR (not while at the wheel, I hasten to add; my husband was driving) and I ADORED it, of course! As a (minor) food writer my ownself, I hooted at every flick of the wire whisk! You are like the evil offspring of MFK Fisher and...David Sedaris or Bill Bryson. Funnnneeeeee.

    But...Jane's right, there were some errors that need addressing in future reprints. Twice you misspelled "beurre" as "buerre," although it was spelled properly elsewhere in the text. And the slang term "grody" was alternatively spelled as "grotty."

    I don't have my copy right at hand so can't cite page numbers...

    But these are the niggling, captious quibbles of a nerdy English/French major...again, great book. Can't wait for the movie. I HOPE you have a cameo appearance in it?

    Finished your book this morning and didn't realize til I was done that you weren't a fictional character. Now I can write to you! What a kick in the pants. Hope you start blogging more. And saying "fuck" more. I was really looking forward to that.

    i am currently reading julie&julia and am in the chapter "disaster/dinner party/dinner party/disaster: a study in duality." i think that your husband and i have the same illness, or "blanche syndrome." mine is called cyclic vomiting syndrome. check out the cvs website-unless, of course, that is he has something else and i just haven't gotten there in the book!
    i can't wait for the movie!

  30. Julie- I'm halfway through reading Julie and julia. Love It so much I stayed up till 430 AM reading it. I'm going to finish it before I see the movie. I love Meryl Streep. She was amazing in Mamma Mia last summer and also in Doubt. Funny how you described her cooking scene from The Hours in your book and she ended up starring in the movie version.

    Also, I'm an associate producer on an independent TV pilot which is a wacky comedy about food. Kind of like AbFab meets Seinfeld at Martha Stewart's dinner. Would appreciate if you could take a look at the clips on our youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watarukitano

    Oh, you have so many people who tell you how much they love your book, but could you hear from just one more?
    I was entranced (To fill with delight, wonder, or enchantment) by your book.
    Well that is the definition, of "entranced", found online anyway, and it works for me.
    I was delighted by your wordplay, your honesty, your drive, all dished up with a big dash of humor.
    It was such a pleasure to read your book I had to read it aloud to my family and friends( and yes, prepare improbable recipes, some of which were " not a do-again" and others sublime!)
    Maybe you did not know it when you wrote the book, but you enriched our families lives, aspic and bitch rice and all!

  32. OMG! I'm so excited. I've just read your book. As an experienced cook and sous chef and I have lots of admiration for your courage. To take on The Project like you did and not have very much experience to even know, "Shoot I'll just sub gelatin for calf's foot jelly." MtAoFC is one book I had put away long ago. Now that I've read your book, I'm giving it another look--with substitutions. Hope the movie is good!

You probably think that Im just another copycat but I have far more working against me than you. I have a 5 month baby, little money and almost no understanding of mathematics.     I was struck most though by your description of "Powell Stomach" that Eric suffers from. I am willing to bet that he has Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. Our son was diagnosed with this (9 years ago) at age 12 and your description fits it perfectly. Check out www.cvsaonline.org.

  39. Just wanted to say that I saw the pre-screening of the movie tonight in Salt Lake City, UT. It was MAGNIFICENT!!! Everyone in the theater was laughing and cheering. Well done. GREAT, GREAT, GREAT movie. I'll go see it again when it comes out on it's release date & can't wait to take my Mom & Sister. Really inspiring movie. Just bought your book & Julia's tonight :) I have rarely cooked, but I feel like I can't wait to start :)
