All right, guys. I'm going to be at Tom Mylan's extraordinary store, The Meat Hook, in Williamsburg, Bklyn, tonight at 7:30, reading and drinking and eating pig heart. You should all come. Usually my readings are relatively staid because when you're at Barnes & Noble, you can't really depend on folks wanting to hear about gutting animals and horrific sex. But the folks at The Meat Hook can take it, so I'm takin' off the gloves...
As a little fore-taste, here's an interview I did with Tom's wife Annaliese for her great blog, Brooklyn Based.
I wish I lived closer to Brooklyn so I could go. I just bought your 1st book today & I love it. I can't wait for my job to be over so I can read some more.

I have always had a way with words and wanted to be a writer growing up, but no support of a dream from family caused me to let my dream be just that "a dream". This past summer, I completed a creative writing class because I want to see what I can accomplish on my own. Hi Julie, I just found your blog after barely seeing the movie. That was so great, I woke up singing this morning. I haven't done that in a long time. I loved what you did and of course I too am a big fan of Julia Child. I have the very first cookbook Master the art and it has a little wear and tear on it and some of the pages show a few spots but I'll always have that cookbook. ReplyDeleteJust finished "Cleaving." I'm... still trying to figure out how I feel about it. It's damn good writing, no question about that. I'll read it again in order to really process it, but I can sure see why the heads of some of your critics are exploding. There is NO WAY to reconcile Perky-Julie-as-portrayed-by-Amy-Adams in "Julie & Julia" with Julie-has-a-knife-and-a-few-issues in "Cleaving." The two will never co-exist. I'd read your book, then your blog, long before the film was announced, so as I sat there in the theater I could see that this Perky-Julie, though appealing in a cinematic way, was NOT you. I think that made it easier to accept the you in "Cleaving." I'm still coming to grips with your story, though, but that's my problem, not yours.

Julia came alive through cooking... key words.. came alive..
it appears through the film you came alive by recalling and reliving memories of her in your younger life. It made you feel good to bring out the julia child cookbook and sort of bring the past alive..
in doing so.. you came alive, received attention, touched others lives and brought your passion for writing to others...AND brought julia child to a generation that would not have been connected to or may not have even known who she is unless you did your blog and dedicated yourself to your personal goal.
SO, I feel she missed the boat in seeing the bigger picture here. You brought her to life for many. I hope you actually did meet her and she appreciated you and your mission. We do...

Love the movie - picked up some great tips on cooking. Loved the way that your life and Julia's were paralleled. The one question I have remaining in my head is - did you ever meet/talk with Julia? If not, it would be a terrible shame. My husband taught her niece in college and she said Thanksgivings at their home were amazing!

I just finished reading your book 'Cleaving.' It was sickening but I finished it like I would watch a car wreck. Your justifications for cheating on your husband and acting like a slut and then writing about it left me incredulous. Good God, where is your sense of pride? It reminds me of when Roseanne wrote her autobiography and told us how before she was famous she worked as a waitress and went out and gave guys blow jobs in their cars for extra money. Who needs to know this kind of stuff?? All it does is make you look like the selfish, self-obsessed adulteress that you really are. Did you read what 'The Week' had to say about your book in their current edition? It was in an article titled 'Women who humiliate mates in print' and said yours was the most savage example of this genre. I hope your husband grabs a nut someday and gives you the boot you so deserve.

This week-end I've bought your book and I've tried to buy the DVD but I have to wait the 20th of January... so I went to the cooking book corner, looking for Julia Child's book... (I have a lot of cooking books... I know... but this one missing to my collection...) but, unfortunatly, no Julia Child's book translated in french... perhaps one day...

Watched, rather slept, through your movie last night. I really, really dislike you. In the scene you were walking on a deserted street late at night I was hoping you would be hit by a bus and end this mess of a movie. Then I open todays WSJ today and have to see your knobby knees. Have considered buying Julia's cookbook, but honestly, I don't think I'd cook many of the things in there. ReplyDeleteAbout six weeks ago I watched Julie & Julia and was so inspired that I not only purchased the book but within the course of a week had whipped up five recipes. The film also inspired me to write again. I love words. The English language is linguistic goulash, to be chewed on, masticated slowly, so as to extract every molecule of flavor out of each and every word. Yum. Yum.

I'm sorry about your dog. My husband and I lost two of ours within four months. Trixie, a Doberman, was almost thirteen; Ross, a Mastiff mix was fourteen. They had a great life. It's an empty house without the two big kids. But we still have two small ones, a Yorkie and a Chihuahua/Italian Greyhound.
