A cool idea from a groovy lady

Food writer Monica Bhide has come up with a nifty idea for promoting her excellent new book, Modern Spice - a virtual potluck dinner! And I'm in charge of drinks, unsurprisingly.

I went with Monica's Pomegranate Delight. It's a simple, refreshing summer cocktail, the pomegranate cutting the sweetness of the grenadine and rum. Quite a success, I'd say!

Here's how it's done:

Pomegranate Delight
Serves 1

Ingredients:

1/4 ounce (1/2 tablespoon) grenadine
1/2 ounce (1 tablespoon) store bought pomegrate juice (see Note)
1/2 teaspoon sweetened lime juice such as Rose's
1 1/2 ounces (3 tablespoons) white rum
Ice as needed
4 ounces (1/2 cup) chilled club soda

Mix the grenadine, pomegranate juice, lime juice and rum in a tall glass. Add ice and the club soda and stir gently. Serve immediately.

Note: You can use plain POM pomegranate juice for this recipe, or try one of the mixed varieties such as Pomegranate-Blueberry for an exotic-tasting cocktail. You can use pomegranate liqueur too, if you like - add 1/4 ounce (1/2 tablespoon.)

I drank two of these yesterday, very, very happily, while my husband slaved away at a borscht. The sun even came out! I credit the Pomegranate Delight.

Visit Monica's blog this evening and see who else is cyber-cooking what else from her fantastic, pretty much failsafe new book, Modern Spice.

Julie, Julie and Julia. Browsing books in Harvard Coop... showed yours to A'85 friend and told him your story. "Cool," he said. Hoping he'll leave law practice and write.

Awesome! I love your post, this drink looks amazing. I had loads of fun doing the potluck with Monica, what a great idea. I think me making this cocktail right now would be a great idea, too.

Hey Julie!
A friend of mine recently loaned me a copy of Julie&Julia because he thought I'd enjoy it...I just finished it, and I LOVED IT!

Of course I'm excited about the movie now too, I just hope that Amy Adams "Julie Powell" isn't too sanitized!

I have a little project myself, and after reading your book, I couldn't help but draw a few parallels...so I wrote a short piece about it on my blog.

Take care, and PLEASE give me something new to read soon!
Michael

That looks so tasty. I love pomegranite and booze, so I want to try this recipe out!

I just wanted to say thank you for writing your blog and your book. It's inspired me to do my own (different) challenge. It is not as interesting or brave as yours, but it is a challenge. So thanks, you really have inspired me. Plus, you're a very entertaining writer.

Hi Julie,
I really loved the pomegranate cocktails from MODERN SPICE -- I recently reviewed Monica's book for the Washingtonian. And have you tried the potato-peanut tikkis? Oh my god, AMAZING.

Anyway, I hate to approach you this way... and I know you must be busy and that the word "blurb" probably makes your heart sink. But I'm writing to ask if you might consider blurbing my first novel, which Harper Collins will publish in January. As you're also a young author, I'm hoping you'll understand the protective feelings for my book that compel me to ask you (even though I'm cringing inside).

I feel totally weird posting this here in your comments section but didn't see any other way to contact you. Anyway, if you might have time to take a look, send me an e-mail and I'll send you more info.

Thanks! (And sorry!)
Ann

Thank you. I intended to buy Julia Child's "My Life in France," and the cookbook a few months ago and got sidetracked. After seeing the trailer for the movie, not only did I buy the two books of Julia's, I also purchased yours and have throughly enjoyed reading them as my own project.
Not only was it enjoyable but it gave me a shove into my own pursuits. As a fellow writer, I must say how inspiring your project and story was. Best of luck.

Hi Julie,
I know you are incredibly busy what with the success of your book and the movie coming out, but I have a request. I work at UT Austin for the Women's and Gender Studies Program and we are planning this year's events which will focus on the theme "Performing Gender". Since you are from Austin, I thought it would be fabulous if you could come speak to our students, faculty and friends about your experiences. It would mean so so much and would fit into our theme. I am thinking that this would be perfect for later in the spring. Please please please.....
