Do you have plans to be in the Los Angeles Area in the near future? I have a feeling my wife would love to meet you. I just saw the movie for the first time and I really liked it. As for my wife, she read your book and saw the movie on opening weekend. She recently followed her passion for baking to culinary school and is a pastry chef and sort of in an in between phase after following me to London where I am studying law. She is so talented and such a wonderful, joyous and delightful person...definitely the butter to my bread and the breath to my life. Anyway, we will be back in the states soon and would definitely come out to see you if you have signings or appearances or something. Lastly, if you have any thoughts or advice on how to help my wife continue following her passion into a career, it would be most appreciated. Bon appetite.

It's so good to know that someone who aspired to do something productive actually managed to do so. My husband makes fun of me CONSTANTLY because I never finish anything, so I had to laugh at "the project"...I also had to laugh at the fact that during this whole escapade you were my age. I guess that means its time for me to fish or cut bait eh? This means yet another night of plotting, planning, and probably beginning something I'll never finish. Congrats to your success, however!

j'ai 36 ans moi aussi et je viens de finir ton livre qui donne une envie folle de s'y mettre. je ne suis pas trés bonne cuisinière mais j'ai de temps en temps des pulsions culinaires qui fonctionnent ou pas mais ravissent ma petite famille. je crois que tu as raison à la fin de ton livre quand tu dis que ce qui est important c'est la joie qu'on prend et qu'on procure aux autres en cuisinant.
je ne connaissais pas julia child avant de te lire, chez moi le livre familial de cuisine est "Tante Marie la véritable cuisine traditionnelle 1000 recettes" édité chez Taride depuis le début du XXème siècle. pas de dessins, mais des recettes courtes et simples qui ne rebutent pas. je voulais juste te préciser que tous les français qui mangent régulièrement de la cuisine traditionnelle (au beurre) ne sont pas tous maigres et élancés, au contraire... le beurre reste bien quelque part !
je n'ai pas encore vu ton film, mais les commentaires sur le blog ont l'air plutôt sympathiques.

So ... I received my copy of Cleaving on Thursday afternoon and was on page 100 by late evening ... what a welcome reprieve from ordinary living your words bring. You take risks in your life and in your writing that I can't help but admire and perhaps even envy.
A word about criticism: sift out the credible from that which is merely passing judgement on your choices in life. Your disclosures are the product of bravery, and I might argue, integrity, that inspire me to let some of my own skeletons out to play.
I'll write again when I've finished the book. So far, bravo!

Im so glad to had a glance at your blog and find out you are exactly as I hoped you would be, after watching the movie last saturday night with my husband! (You might be happy to know what I prepared to dinner, as we watched while eating: turkey's scaloppine with marsala AND BUTTER , onion and pears, mixed green salad and creme brulée)
We loved the portrait of you and your husband homelife..we both felt so similar to you and him, I never heard before of your book and blog but I am also concentrating very much in cooking as a way to sort out myself during this year of being stuck with my career and try to find my own way: in Italy I would be a barrister but abroad, where we are now, im just a housewife: we took this choice as my husband has a really great job here. What made me feel so connected with you is the fact that he is also supporting me a lot in my insane desire of becoming a writer and I always tell him that until im not published im not a writer :-D!

Hey Julie,
I wanted to throw my hat into the comment party as well. I'm uber late to the game, just saw your movie on a recent flight, and LOVED it. I'm not a cook at all, and while the idea of cooking pleases me, I have no patience. When I'm hungry, I want to eat, and that planning ahead for dinner stuff isn't my strength.
So I'm not necessarily the 'target' because I'm no foodie, or wannabe foodie. But your movie inspired me a great deal, and when I have a job again, I'm going to go out and grab me your book! I enjoyed watching 'you' or 'your character' deal with issues that I am also currently grappling with, ie I feel like I've mostly wasted my years after high school, didn't go to University, spent a ton of time languishing in dead end jobs, and so on.
After getting laid off, I have been mulling about the idea of making some changes in my life, and while I was already headed in that direction, your movie provided me with inspiration, and affirmation that I should continue to work on this.
So thank you so much for your life inspirations, and for doing it first and paving the way for others to come.
