Two words. MEAT. HOOK.

All right, guys. I'm going to be at Tom Mylan's extraordinary store, The Meat Hook, in Williamsburg, Bklyn, tonight at 7:30, reading and drinking and eating pig heart. You should all come. Usually my readings are relatively staid because when you're at Barnes & Noble, you can't really depend on folks wanting to hear about gutting animals and horrific sex. But the folks at The Meat Hook can take it, so I'm takin' off the gloves...

As a little fore-taste, here's an interview I did with Tom's wife Annaliese for her great blog, Brooklyn Based.

I wish I lived closer to Brooklyn so I could go. I just bought your 1st book today & I love it. I can't wait for my job to be over so I can read some more.

Good luck with your reading tonight!! =)

Hi Julie. I watched Julie & Julia this weekend and you are truly an inspiration to me. I too work in a "call center" and find myself on the opposite end of harsh words, attitude. I have always had a way with words and wanted to be a writer growing up, but no support of a dream from family caused me to let my dream be just that "a dream". This past summer, I completed a creative writing class because I want to see what I can accomplish on my own. After "A"cing my class and being inspired by your story, I know that I can do whatever I put my mind to. Thanks Julie and best of luck with your future endeavors. Merry Christmas to you and your family!!!

Just missed you. I just watched your movie tonight, and noticed you were in Brooklyn today. Not too far from where I work. I am the chef at Dumont restaurant. Would have liked to see you at the meat hook. If you are ever back in Williamsburg come by Dumont. I also noticed you did you book reading at KGB. It's where I took my girlfriend for our first drink.

I just watched Julie and Julia, and I loved it! It is a great movie. I've never owned a copy of Julia's book, but because you challenged yourself to cook all the recipes in her book, I now want to purchase her book and I want to get yours as well. You are very inspiring!

Ms. Powell, Last night I watched Julie & Julia. Today, I just finished reading the article in People Magazine whereby you speak of your marital transgression. Kudos to your husband and D (as you called him) for co-signing your openness; however, was it really necessary to share that with everyone! Purging may have helped you - but, regardless of their approval, did you ever really consider the affects it would have on others?

I don't know, extra martial affairs are not new - they happen even in the best of relationships; I just wonder does anyone believe in privacy anymore.

Hi Julie, I just found your blog after barely seeing the movie. That was so great, I woke up singing this morning. I haven't done that in a long time. I loved what you did and of course I too am a big fan of Julia Child. I have the very first cookbook Master the art and it has a little wear and tear on it and some of the pages show a few spots but I'll always have that cookbook. Glad I found your blog and that you are still here. Happy Holidays.

Just finished "Cleaving." I'm... still trying to figure out how I feel about it. It's damn good writing, no question about that. I'll read it again in order to really process it, but I can sure see why the heads of some of your critics are exploding. There is NO WAY to reconcile Perky-Julie-as-portrayed-by-Amy-Adams in "Julie & Julia" with Julie-has-a-knife-and-a-few-issues in "Cleaving." The two will never co-exist. I'd read your book, then your blog, long before the film was announced, so as I sat there in the theater I could see that this Perky-Julie, though appealing in a cinematic way, was NOT you. I think that made it easier to accept the you in "Cleaving." I'm still coming to grips with your story, though, but that's my problem, not yours.

Bottom line, you're a hell of a writer, lady, and you've got more guts than all the butcher shops in the world.

Just read Cleaving. I was inspired to read it because I read that it included the story of how your affair impacted your marriage. I just started an affair even though I'm very happily married. Thanks for being so honest and for allowing me to feel like -- even if I'm not making the best decision -- I'm at least in good company.

I just seen the movie, I enjoyed it a lot. I'm thinking I'll need to pick up your first book and the new one - I'll be honest the affair is what made me want to read it and not in a bad way, I read your blog and after the movie just ended I need more. I wanted to know what happened (even though I already knew!) so I think that your books are going on my wish-list this year for Christmas. Hope all is well over where you are, and that you have many success' in the future.

HI julie Powell.. my name is dave metty. i watched the film on my way back to CA. from Beijing China. So you can imagine I was able to give the film my complete undivided attention. When I returned home I had to find out of you and julia ever met and became pals.
Un fortunately it seems as if that never worked out.
SOOOooo while discussing this topic with my pregnant wife at 4am while she nurses a migraine.......
I decided I had to share our opinion... here it is
Julia came alive through cooking... key words.. came alive..
it appears through the film you came alive by recalling and reliving memories of her in your younger life. It made you feel good to bring out the julia child cookbook and sort of bring the past alive..
in doing so.. you came alive, received attention, touched others lives and brought your passion for writing to others...AND brought julia child to a generation that would not have been connected to or may not have even known who she is unless you did your blog and dedicated yourself to your personal goal.
SO, I feel she missed the boat in seeing the bigger picture here. You brought her to life for many. I hope you actually did meet her and she appreciated you and your mission. We do...

Hi, I`m from Brazil - Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte - and I just watched "Julie & Julia" movie yesterday. You are great. Julia too. I could feel that you found something that most of us don`t find in our whole life: a true passion, a true meaning, an escape from the routine and frustration, something bigger than we imagine for ourselves. I loved your life history. And Julia`s life too. She`s wonderful: we could see that she really loved what she did. And that`s what matters in our lives.

I was really inspired by you. I`m sure the world would be a better place with people who have the attitude you had: to take hard decisions, go ahead and do something great in life.

Thanks

I just finished reading your book 'Cleaving.' It was sickening but I finished it like I would watch a car wreck. Your justifications for cheating on your husband and acting like a slut and then writing about it left me incredulous. Good God, where is your sense of pride? It reminds me of when Roseanne wrote her autobiography and told us how before she was famous she worked as a waitress and went out and gave guys blow jobs in their cars for extra money. Who needs to know this kind of stuff?? All it does is make you look like the selfish, self-obsessed adulteress that you really are. Did you read what 'The Week' had to say about your book in their current edition? It was in an article titled 'Women who humiliate mates in print' and said yours was the most savage example of this genre. I hope your husband grabs a nut someday and gives you the boot you so deserve.

Hello Julie,

Sorry for my bad english (this comment comes from France...). Just to say that I've seen the movie 2 weeks ago and I think of it every day...
I was in the plane, going to India for my job, thinking of my life, and I've seen Julie&Julia film on the little screen... I've watched it (good to know... I love cooking and eating of course...) and Waouuuuuhhh... so pleasant, so nice and full of good things... Thank you so much for your story ! It gives us courage !
This week-end I've bought your book and I've tried to buy the DVD but I have to wait the 20th of January... so I went to the cooking book corner, looking for Julia Child's book... (I have a lot of cooking books... I know... but this one missing to my collection...) but, unfortunatly, no Julia Child's book translated in french... perhaps one day...
If I can't wait, I will buy it in english...

Good luck Julie !

In the scene you were walking on a deserted street late at night I was hoping you would be hit by a bus and end this mess of a movie. Then I open todays WSJ today and have to see your knobby knees. Yuck. Please go away. I do not want to hear about your childish, immature antics even by third hand accounts.

Hey, Dixdak... So sorry you've developed a deep hatred for me based on a fictional character in a movie I had nothing to do with writing (You do realize I'm not actually Amy Adams, right?), and on the sight of my knobby knees. Don't know that I can promise to disappear off the face of the planet for your pleasure, sad to say, but I imagine one small way you can avoid having to pay attention to me is to not google your way to this little blog of mine. I think dixdak is being unfair - the movie was enchanting and the depiction of both couples was cute. On the other hand, Jill Margaret's umbrage at your(Julie's)unfaithful romp could not have been framed more appropriately.

At such a late time in her life, Julia probably had developed a keen intuition on whom to avoid. Perhaps when you have the time, you could sit naked on a stool in the display window at Macy's - wearing a dunce hat would be nice.

About six weeks ago I watched Julie & Julia and was so inspired that I not only purchased the book but within the course of a week had whipped up five recipes. The film also inspired me to write again. I love words. The English language is linguistic goulash, to be chewed on, masticated slowly, so as to extract every molecule of flavor out of each and every word. Yum. Yum.

Good for you for making life come to you.

I'm sorry about your dog. My husband and I lost two of ours within four months. Trixie, a Doberman, was almost thirteen; Ross, a Mastiff mix was fourteen. They had a great life. It's an empty house without the two big kids. But we still have two small ones, a Yorkie and a Chihuahua/Italian Greyhound.
